President José Raúl Mulino reaffirmed this Friday his commitment to clear electoral rules to guarantee the popular will in Panamanian elections. He recalled that his candidacy was uncertain and was not confirmed until just 4 days before the election due to the private interests of those who sought to win the election by proscribing his candidacy. The president reminded that he had told various individuals he spoke with that the country would erupt if the unconstitutionality of his candidacy was declared illegally, affecting the popular will of the Panamanian people; something that ultimately did not happen due to a Supreme Court ruling. This was in reference to the fact that all serious opinion polls indicated a victory for his candidacy and the electorate would not tolerate a blow to democracy. This message was also expressed before the OAS, to Susana Malcorra, the observer for this organization for the 2024 election. Mulino said: 'The country was going to ignite if they declared my presidential candidacy illegal.'
