Comptroller Rejects Rumors of Distance with the Attorney General and Clarifies 112 Audits Have Been Delivered

Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino stated at this morning's press conference that the Attorney General needs well-conducted audits to properly support criminal cases and prevent them from being dismissed in court due to a flawed audit or an incorrect demonstration of economic harm to the Panamanian state.

In this regard, Comptroller General Anel Flores reported that to date, they have delivered 112 audits in the 11 months he has been in office, a figure that surpasses the 60 conducted in the last five years.

He added that they face limitations due to a shortage of staff and an excessive number of tasks, and has reiterated that to meet all national requirements, they would need the equivalent of three comptroller offices, resources they lack in both personnel and budget.

Flores explained that yesterday they agreed with the Attorney General to prioritize the most emblematic and high-impact cases concerning the public treasury.

He added that they have been working closely together, with a team that has met weekly for the past month, and that progress has been made in this direction.

Regarding comments suggesting a distance between the two institutions, the Comptroller indicated that there is a clear interest in seeing how they are distanced, but that this will not happen.

He affirmed that the Attorney General and he are on the same team, and both are there to serve the Panamanian people and recover the funds that were embezzled by those who abused power.
