Panama's Chancellor Refutes Bukele's Information on Teacher Assault

Panama's Chancellor, Javier Martínez-Acha, clarified on Friday that information about a student incident spread by Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele was «inaccurate» and expressed his confidence that both Central American nations «will continue to support each other based on truth and respect».

Martínez-Acha referred to a post by Bukele on social media X, in which the ruler spoke about the importance of discipline and respect between teachers and students when commenting on a video shared by the Alerta Mundial account. The video showed a fight in a school under the title «Two students assault the English teacher in a school in Panama».

«If we want a different future, we have to sow differently, and for that we need discipline,» Bukele opined.

In response, Panama's Chancellor wrote on X that he thanks Bukele «for his interest in educational values and the training» of young Panamanians, which is «a commitment that Panama also shares,» and clarified that the incident cited «did not involve a teacher at any point».

«This isolated and shameful act perpetrated by three students (...) is being addressed by the specialized team of Panama's Ministry of Education,» stated Martínez-Acha.

«Precisely because we share the conviction that discipline, respect, and values-based education are essential for the future of our countries, we consider it fundamental that public opinions are based on verified information,» expressed the Chancellor.

«Panama will continue to work responsibly to channel situations like this and strengthen the education of our youth, while we trust that our friendly nations will continue to support each other from truth and respect,» concluded Martínez-Acha.
