The Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the Autonomous University of Chiriquí (UNACHI), Evelia Aparicio de Esquivel, was suspended from her position after a judge charged her with embezzlement. That day it will be known whether the judge maintains the suspension… or whether it ends in preventive detention. The high-ranking UNACHI official is accused of allegedly receiving double pay over a four-year period, from 2017 to 2021, totaling more than $375,000. At the hearing, the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office presented evidence, arguments, and a request for the dean’s preventive detention. The judge, while acknowledging the seriousness of the case, ordered her suspension from her position while the proceedings continue. The prosecution was not happy with that measure and requested an appeal, scheduled for December 4.
