Panama's Comptroller General Reveals Corruption Data

Panama's Comptroller General Anel Flores reported suspicions of misuse of millions of dollars intended for municipalities, linking it to the 2024 election campaign. He handed over thousands of cases to the prosecutor's office and called for accountability.

The Comptroller General of the Republic, Anel Flores, revealed that the entity has analyzed more than 4,000 cases related to economic aid granted by the Institute for the Training and Use of Human Resources (Ifarhu). The comptroller also referred to the audits requested by the Minister of Economy and Finance, Felipe Champan, regarding the use of $6.9 million transferred to various municipalities in the country. Flores indicated that there is suspicion that these funds were used for aid during the 2024 elections. Flores detailed that more than 2,860 files have been submitted to the Public Ministry, representing an economic loss to the country exceeding $52 million. The comptroller also announced that they will deliver 18 audits of the decentralized community boards of the previous government. According to the comptroller, the deputies who are demanding clarification on extraordinary transfers to municipalities are the same ones requesting extensions because they have not been able to present their accountability reports. "We hope that the Public Ministry will do the same and that we can somehow recover these funds, that they become loans, or that someone pays for the consequences of the misuse of Panamanian money," he expressed. "As they say in my town, they are seeing the speck in the other's eye, but not the beam in their own," Flores stated.
