Court Revokes House Arrest for Indigenous Leader Toribio García

An appeals court has revoked the house arrest of Toribio García, an indigenous leader from the Viguí community. This decision will allow him to attend regular medical check-ups. García was hospitalized last month due to severe chest pain, and his health condition is concerning.


In April, García reported that his health condition had deteriorated and the doctors' signals were not encouraging. His lawyers said that García will face the investigations against him, although they recalled that the right to health is enshrined in the Constitution. Last month, García required hospitalization after suffering a strong pain in the chest. However, García must notify the 15th and 30th of each month as part of the judicial process he is involved in. An Appeals Court revoked this week the house arrest measure that weighed on the indigenous leader Toribio García. In June, the citizen was charged with crimes against the administration of justice in the form of apology for the crime and against the legal personality of the State in the form against the internal personality of the State. According to his defense, this change of measure will allow him to attend his medical check-ups regularly to follow up on his health ailments. At the beginning of October, a guarantees judge authorized his exit from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. to a commercial premises so that he could work. All these crimes are linked to the events that occurred in May and June 2025, in the community of Viguí, in the east of the province of Chiriquí.
