Crisis of Trust in Panama's Judicial System

The President of the Supreme Court, María Eugenia López, faces growing pressure and accusations of corruption and abuse of power. Lawyers and public figures are calling for a special investigative committee to probe numerous scandals that are eroding trust in the country's judicial system.

Lawyer Juan Carlos Arauz stated that there is a lack of institutional spokespeople capable of responding to public inquiries, explaining sensitive decisions, and clarifying facts that affect the image of the judicial system.

Arauz also pointed to a presumed collusion between public officials and the media to push certain versions of events, with the backing of state resources and media campaigns.

The management of the current President of the Supreme Court of Justice, María Eugenia López, is going through a period of growing public scrutiny, amid complaints and questions that have reignited the debate on transparency, judicial independence, and the management of public resources within the Judicial Branch.

On the other hand, López has faced questioning that includes complaints filed with the National Assembly of Deputies for alleged crimes of document falsification, against public administration, and fraud in public contracting.

In turn, constitutional lawyer Miguel Antonio Bernal warned through his account on social network X about the seriousness of publications denouncing the alleged existence of a criminal organization dedicated to extortion and blackmail, which could have influenced high-profile judicial decisions.

However, he maintained that the institutional silence in the face of public questioning deepens citizen distrust.

Along the same lines, he emphasized that the Judicial Branch is not a single figure, but a collegiate body whose decisions are shared and whose accountability must be collective, which would allow for distributing responsibilities and correcting flaws without institutional staining the administrative management.

The former president of the National College of Lawyers, Juan Carlos Arauz, warned that it is necessary to differentiate between the debates generated outside the courts and those that, within the justice system, must meet formal parameters to have legal effects.

At that time, the hiring of an armored car for the protection of the president of the Court was also reported.

To the controversy is added the salary increase approved during her administration, which raised the monthly salary of the Court's magistrates to 14 thousand dollars, a measure that generated criticism from various sectors for taking place in a context of economic difficulties.

In this regard, he urged the formation of a special investigative commission to present an exhaustive report to the country and clear up doubts about the denounced facts, warning that inaction could further erode trust in justice.

In the same critical vein, lawyer Alfredo Vallarino stated that the passage of time has cast doubt on the credibility of former prosecutors, former magistrates, and figures who were once presented as benchmarks in the fight against corruption.

The debate has intensified following the recent statements by lawyer Karisma Karamañites and the dissemination on social networks of complaints about alleged irregularities in high-profile rulings, which has revived doubts about the credibility and institutional communication of the Judicial Branch.

He also recalled that the period of María Eugenia López at the head of the Court is about to end, which would bring new winds.

These accusations were presented in August 2025.
