Panama's President Denies Ethanol Project Deal Rumors

Panama's President José Raúl Mulino addressed rumors circulating in the streets and on social media regarding a supposed deal involving the ethanol project.

The president stated that there is no production, no plants, no sugarcane planted, and no hidden business. "They talk about a deal when there isn't even a single stalk of sugarcane for ethanol here," Mulino said during his press conference. He assured that the topic is still in a preliminary phase, focused on building a transparent legal framework without privileges or under-the-table arrangements.

He explained that the goal is to pave the way for any entrepreneur who wants to participate to do so on equal terms when the project is ready and under clear rules.

Mulino also highlighted that the project could attract over 400 million dollars in investment and generate up to 20,000 jobs, always under clear rules with a priority on the national product, even if ethanol importation is allowed in an initial stage.

The president reiterated that this project is a government priority, but it will be discussed with transparency when it reaches the National Assembly.

"This is a long process, not something improvised, much less shady," he emphasized.

Comptroller Anel Flores backed the president's words, calling the accusations "gossip and urban legends." He recalled that it was also previously said that banana plantations in Bocas del Toro would be purchased, something that never happened.

Flores stated that the sugarcane currently planted in the country will continue to be destined for sugar production, and that the country's food supply will never be at risk due to ethanol production.
