The Ministry of Education (Meduca) has incorporated socio-emotional content, entrepreneurship, and artificial intelligence into the curriculum redesign that will be implemented next year, as reported by Isis Núñez, National Director of Curriculum and Educational Technology at Meduca.

According to the official, methodological strategies have also been implemented because «it is useless to have an updated curriculum if the teacher maintains the same methodology».

She highlighted that the redesign will cover from preschool to twelfth grade.

Additionally, she mentioned that this year a National Curriculum Innovation and Update Team was formed, including professors, teachers, directors, national and regional supervisors, with the goal of diagnosing needs and updating content.

«Currently, we have incorporated two new competencies: entrepreneurship and socio-emotional ones. The curriculum currently has 10 incorporated competencies. We want to execute all this work by 2026,» she stated.

According to Núñez, during this process, 276 subjects corresponding to the 28 active high school programs were reviewed, following an analysis that incorporated results from tests such as PISA, ERCE, and CRECE.

The official mentioned that the objective of the redesign is to align education with global changes and the demands of the business sector.

She stated that there are currently 28 high school programs, but the department maintains that many specializations are very similar and could be unified, such as in commerce and accounting, which differ in only two or three subjects.

«We want to propose that these be unified and that only one be made,» expressed Núñez.

Regarding the possibility of eliminating high school programs, she said that for the moment, none have been suspended, as this year's process focused on content updates.

Meanwhile, she recalled that in countries like Colombia and Costa Rica, they maintain two or three broader high school programs, oriented towards academic or scientific training.

Finally, she said that from January 19 to 23, there will be training for directors of educational centers; and the first week of February will be for teachers.
