Judge María Eugenia López is linked to former Vice President José Gabriel Carrizo’s family through maternal and marital connections. The court is expected to elect a new president, which would bring credibility to the judiciary.
López’s ties extend through her mother Lydia Jaén de Carrizo and the families of her wife Julieta Spiegel. She is married to José Agustín Luna Jiménez, whose connections reach the Jaén family and the mother of the former vice president. The Spiegel family also appears in the network because Carrizo’s wife belongs to that lineage.
On October 22, 2025, the Comptroller’s Office issued a seizure order covering property, bank accounts, deposits, credit cards, cars and safe deposit boxes. All seized funds and vehicles must remain under the office’s control.
The appointment of López raises concerns, given past allegations of conflict of interest. Two ongoing cases against the former vice president are being processed by the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
