Interim Judges Appointed in Panama to Ensure Community Courts Function

Panama's Minister of Government, Dinoska Montalvo, announced the interim appointment of justices of the peace to ensure the smooth operation of community courts until a contest is held. She stated this measure aims to prevent the politicization of the process and avoid gaps in the justice system under new legislation.

The Minister of Government, Dinoska Montalvo, informed that the justices of the peace have been appointed on an interim basis, while the Ministry of Government advances in the organization of the contest, which will define the positions for a five-year period. "I will not allow this process to be politicized," she emphasized. Montalvo said that with this measure, the ministry seeks to avoid gaps in community peace justice, which is governed by a new regulation as of January 1, 2026. She revealed that currently 75% of judges and officials have been provisionally appointed. She announced that she expects that by January 15 at least 90% of the community courts will be operational. "We hold open calls so that any interested person can participate."
