Lawyer: Odebrecht money in 2009 was not a crime

Lawyer Basilio González, defending Aaron Mizrachi, stated that receiving money from Odebrecht in 2009 for a presidential campaign is an administrative matter, not a crime, and that this process was annulled by the Supreme Court.

Lawyer: Odebrecht money in 2009 was not a crime

Lawyer Basilio González, defender of Aaron Mizrachi, explained that his client received money from the Odebrecht company intended for the presidential campaign of Ricardo Martinelli and Juan Carlos Varela in 2009. However, he maintained that this fact does not constitute a crime, but rather an administrative matter. He also emphasized that this process was subsequently annulled by the Supreme Court of Justice of that country. In this regard, he presented a certification before the Electoral Tribunal to prove this fact. When consulted about a supposed triangulation to hide the origin of the money, González pointed out that the norm establishes that he must receive money from an illicit activity for a crime to be configured. He recalled that in 2009 Odebrecht was a company with which numerous entrepreneurs maintained business relations, including television channels that advertised with the Brazilian construction company. "That means that if the television channels and all the people who received money from Odebrecht knew it was from something illicit, then everyone should be charged with money laundering," he expressed. The lawyer added that the public became aware of the bribes linked to Odebrecht starting in 2016, when the Lava Jato case broke out in Brazil.
