Panamanian Reported Released from Venezuelan Detention is Still Jailed

The government of Panama has refuted earlier reports of the release of its citizen Javier Olmedo Núñez, who has been detained in Venezuela for seven months. The country's Foreign Ministry is actively engaged in diplomatic negotiations for his return home.

The Panamanian Javier Olmedo Núñez remains under detention by the Venezuelan regime, as confirmed by the Ministry of Foreign Relations, which had earlier reported his release. Earlier, the National Government had confirmed Núñez's release. "The Ministry of Foreign Relations continues its efforts for the liberation of Javier Olmedo Núñez, who has been detained in Venezuela for seven months and was on the list of those to be released," the Ministry of Foreign Relations posted on X. It added that "by order of President José Raúl Mulino, the National Government is giving permanent follow-up to the case." Olmedo is part of a long list of people that the Venezuelan dictatorial regime keeps under detention without legal processes. In fact, in that first communiqué, it was stated that President Mulino had instructed all State entities to deploy the necessary diplomatic efforts to achieve the prompt release of the compatriot, maintaining permanent attention to the process. Indeed, after the arrest of dictator Nicolás Maduro, it was possible to secure the release of many of these detainees, both locals and foreigners. Nevertheless, Panama continues to do its part to bring Núñez back to his country and to his family.
