Panama - A man was sentenced to 18 years in prison for, on January 7th, raping a 7-year-old girl and making another 6-year-old witness these sexual acts. According to details from the Public Ministry, the express sentence was achieved through a penalty agreement reached between the Guna Yala Municipal Office, the defense of the accused, and the representatives of the victims. During the hearing, the Municipal Office also managed to get the Guarantees Court to impose an accessory penalty on the convicted man for the same period as the main sentence, which disqualifies him from holding positions, jobs, or professions in kindergartens, school centers, fields or sports centers and adjacent areas, or in any place where minors regularly gather to carry out activities for their comprehensive development. According to the case file, the now-convicted 68-year-old man committed the crimes of corruption of minors and aggravated rape that were attributed to him in a community in the Guna Yala region, taking advantage of the victims' vulnerability. On the other hand, the National Police arrested in Ollas Arriba, district of Capira (West Panama), a citizen wanted by judicial authorities, with a 9-year prison sentence for the crime of aggravated rape. Once located, the convicted man was placed at the disposal of the competent authorities to be remanded to the penitentiary center where he must serve his sentence.
