Panama Holds Education Reform Consultations

Panama's Ministry of Education has launched nationwide consultations to draft a new framework education law, which will define the principles of the national education system from preschool to university. The goal is to create a law that meets the needs of the labor market and society, excluding partisan politics from education.

The General Secretary of Panama's Ministry of Education, Luis Herrera, stated that during the consultations, all representatives of Panamanian civil society will be heard, including educational guilds, parents, students, opinion leaders, and members of the educational system, as well as school directors and educational networks.

«So that, by consensus, all of society can contribute its point of view,» he added.

The General Secretary noted that in the Ministry of Education (Meduca), they believe the educational reform should be a framework law that establishes clear principles for national education, from preschool to university level.

He also added that Meduca is continuing to work on its planned projects, including the curriculum review, so that the graduate, according to Herrera, becomes «the professional that the Panamanian labor market and academia require».

«What education law do we need for this country to continue growing and for our students, because the main focus of an education law is the student, who is both the object and subject of education,» he emphasized.

Herrera pointed out that through education, it is possible to «change the material conditions of our children and adolescents without political partisanship, because what we have to do is remove partisan politics from education.»

He said he cannot give a specific date for having a draft but expressed confidence that Panamanian society will see «the result of the active listening that Meduca is doing with different organizations, entrepreneurs, educators, civil society, parents, and the educational system to produce an education law that provides the benefits our students need.»

Additionally, he reported that work is being done on infrastructure maintenance and on bringing education to every child and adolescent in the country.

The General Secretary of Meduca also confirmed that the República Venezuela school is ready for its inauguration.

He concluded that they already have a work schedule with 16 meetings with different organizations.

«We have that calendar planned, and we are at a good pace,» he specified.
