A man was apprehended in Panama on Wednesday after he beat his mother and threatened to set fire to her house with her and his father inside because they refused to give him money. This episode of domestic violence took place in the district of Barú, province of Chiriquí, where the suspect was also apprehended. The situation has outraged the community, mainly because the elderly parents are around 80 years old, and the man is young and strong, aspects that he took advantage of to attack his parents. Now, the suspect will be presented before a guarantees judge, who must process this serious case of domestic violence that, fortunately, did not have fatal consequences. In Panama, article 200 of the Penal Code states: "Whoever harasses or physically, psychologically or patrimonially attacks another member of the family will be punished with imprisonment of five to eight years and multidisciplinary therapeutic treatment in a state or private health center that has specialized care, provided that the conduct does not constitute crimes punishable by a more severe penalty". Meanwhile, according to article 201, the penalty will increase from six to nine years in prison if the physical injuries caused produce an incapacity of more than thirty days and not exceeding sixty days.
