Former President Ricardo Martinelli stated that in Panama, the real culprits are still at large, directly pointing to brothers Laurentino and Roy Cortizo, whom he mentioned as figures who, in his opinion, have not faced justice while others are being prosecuted.
Martinelli claimed that many of the current judicial cases do not actually target those who were really in charge, but instead turn some into "scapegoats", as in the case of former Vice President José Gabriel Carrizo, while impunity remains for those who held power during the previous government.
In his message, the former leader reiterated that in his case, neither the law nor due process was respected, and that he was a victim of an unjust and illegal political persecution.
He maintained that this all happened because he was on the verge of winning an election by a landslide with the support of the people.
According to Martinelli, they fabricated a case against him to remove him from the political path, as his return would have meant solving the country's economic situation, generating jobs, development and well-being for the people.
The former president also denounced that he remains in exile, far from Panama and his loved ones, and that his only wish is to spend his final years with his family.
"Nevertheless, he assured that he harbors no hatred or resentment. 'I only ask for the same that I ask for Panama today: law, justice, and due process for all, without exception,' Martinelli concluded in his post."
