Minister of Social Development Visits Tocumen Center

The president of the board of directors of the National Secretariat for Childhood, Adolescence and Family (Senniaf), Beatriz Carles, visited the facilities of the Comprehensive Care Center (CAI) in Tocumen, accompanied by personnel from the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef), led by its director in Panama, Sandie Blanchet, amidst recent complaints about alleged irregularities in the center's operation. During the tour, the Minister of Social Development inspected the care areas, held meetings with the staff, and spoke with Unicef representatives about protection protocols and quality standards in the care of minors. This visit is part of a direct supervision strategy aimed at strengthening child protection mechanisms. 'This action is framed within the firm commitment we have as an institution to guarantee the best interests of the child at all times. We cannot and will not be indifferent to any situation that puts our children and girls at risk,' declared Carles. Carles assured that the National Government, upon learning of the complaints that have arisen around the center, is in the process of adopting concrete measures so that any detected failure can be corrected. 'Our determination is clear: that everything that is operating incorrectly in the child protection system is corrected immediately,' she affirmed. Unicef has informed of the need to strengthen protection standards and promote safe environments for childhood. 'We are not going to minimize any warning sign. We are not going to speculate either; we are going to investigate in a serious and objective way,' said Carles.
