Panama Verdict: 42 Years in Prison for Taxi Driver's Murder and Robbery

In Panama, a man was sentenced to 42 years in prison for the robbery and homicide of a taxi driver. The court determined that of the 42-year sentence, 30 years are for aggravated homicide and 12 years for aggravated robbery. Additionally, the convicted individual was given an accessory penalty, which bars him from holding public office for five years after completing his main sentence. During the trial, the prosecution presented over 40 pieces of evidence, including testimonial, expert, documentary, and material evidence, which proved the criminal acts and the responsibility of the accused. This allowed the tribunal to issue a guilty verdict unanimously. The homicide of Moreno took place on March 4, 2024, in Hato Pilón, Ngäbe Buglé. On that day, the victim was attacked by the now-convicted man with a bladed weapon, in the company of several other people, who also appropriated his money. For the same case, another person remains under provisional detention, accused and in a penitentiary center, awaiting being brought to oral trial to determine their responsibility in both crimes.
