According to the Public Ministry's investigation, the case involves 952 checks that were cashed at a bank in the locality. In the same process, the former treasurer of the Campana communal board during that period is also included. The former representative of the Campana district, in the district of Capira, Nelson García (2019-2024), was charged with the crime of aggravated embezzlement and sent to provisional detention after a multiple-request hearing held this Wednesday in the Accusatory Penal System (SPA) of West Panama. During the judicial proceeding, the guarantees judge decided to order the custodial measure while the investigation progresses. García's defense filed an appeal, so the application hearing was set for March 23, where the decision will be reviewed. Authorities point to the former representative as being responsible for managing B/. 570,084.69 belonging to the Public Works and Municipal Services Investment Program (PIOPS). In his case, the guarantees judge imposed a precautionary measure of periodic notification on the 5th and 20th of each month, in addition to a prohibition from approaching the communal board's offices.
