Panama Judge Approves Asset Seizure in Public Funds Case

A Panamanian judge has greenlit the progress of an investigation into a former Pandeportes director, Hector Brands, and other individuals. During the hearing, the judge authorized the seizure of movable and immovable property, as well as bank accounts linked to the accused. It was explained that these assets are related to a case of alleged unjust enrichment and money laundering. However, the judge also ordered the lifting of measures on assets that have no direct connection to the process, following a review presented to the tribunal. This process stems from a forensic audit report by the Comptroller General's Office, which details an unjustified increase in the former deputy and ex-director of Pandeportes' assets between 2021 and 2024. On behalf of the Public Ministry, Prosecutor Lizzie Bonilla participated, while the defense was represented by lawyers Victor Orobio, Holanda Polo, and David Bowen.
