Panama Comptroller Interrupts Prosecutor's Probe

After the Comptroller General Aniel Flores burst into a proceeding of the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office, where auditors from the Comptroller General of the Republic were giving statements within a judicial investigation, Prosecutor Luis Carlos Gómez requested a meeting of the Judicial Council to report on what happened. Sources from the Judicial Branch informed La Prensa that the meeting will be held this Friday, April 10, at 2:00 p.m., and that all members of the body have been summoned, including the Administrative Prosecution, the National College of Lawyers, representatives of civil society, magistrates from the Supreme Court of Justice, and the Public Prosecutor's Office. The call for the meeting came after the events registered last Thursday at the headquarters of the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office, when a group of auditors from the Comptroller's Office appeared to explain the findings of the audit to former Vice President José Gabriel Carrizo. What does the Judicial Council do? The Judicial Council brings together authorities from the judicial system, representatives from the Prosecutor's Office, civil society, and professional colleges, and directly coordinates issues related to the administration of justice and judicial independence. This body analyzes situations that may affect the autonomy of judges and prosecutors, ensures that decisions and investigations are carried out with transparency, legality, and respect for due process, and acts as a forum to evaluate possible overreach by authorities. In cases such as the comptroller's intrusion into the Prosecutor's Office proceedings, the Judicial Council determines how to protect institutionalism and the autonomy of the Public Ministry. The investigation into Carrizo Carrizo is accused of the alleged crime of unjust enrichment and is currently under a precautionary measure of house arrest and a travel ban. The former vice president was apprehended on January 27 at Tocumen International Airport, coming from Guatemala. Subsequently, Guarantees Judge Oris Medina charged him with alleged unjust enrichment and ordered house arrest. Information to be updated.
