The president of the Industrial Union of Panama (SIP) has urged the Government to expedite the review of mining issues in the country, suggesting the possibility of holding a referendum for citizens to decide whether or not mining exploitation should be allowed.
In this regard, the president of the SIP emphasized the importance of addressing this issue transparently and with the active participation of the population. According to his words: "It is essential that citizens have the opportunity to express their opinion and decide on such a relevant issue as the exploitation of mineral resources in our country."
The debate over mining exploitation in Panama has generated conflicting opinions, with supporters arguing for potential economic and employment benefits, while opponents point out the negative impacts this activity could have on the environment and local communities.
In light of this situation, the proposal to hold a referendum gains strength as a mechanism to resolve this controversy in a democratic and participatory manner. Ultimately, it will be the decision of the Government and the relevant authorities to define whether this popular consultation will take place and how it will proceed regarding mining exploitation in the country.
