Captain Demosthenes Sánchez Torres, along with a group of students and faculty, officially announced his candidacy for rector of the International Maritime University of Panama last Thursday, October 24. Sánchez Torres, with solid experience in the maritime field, expressed his desire to promote education and discipline in the institution.

Regarding his education, Captain Demosthenes is an Engineer in Nautical Sciences and holds a limitless Captain license, as well as a postgraduate degree in Higher Education and a master's degree in Port Management and Intermodal Transport. He has obtained certifications in energy efficiency from the UN and is currently pursuing a PhD in Nautical Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Barcelona.

In addition to his academic background, Sánchez has led successful programs for the onboarding of cadets and maritime personnel, as well as conducted certification training with the United States Coast Guard in various areas, including inspections of passenger and gas carrier vessels.

With experience as a captain in international waters on tankers, tugboats, and passenger vessels, Demosthenes has also taught at the higher education level in engineering and master's programs at various universities. His proposal for the International Maritime University of Panama focuses on supporting young people in their professional development, contributing to the progress of the country.
