The Professional Footballers Association of Panama (Afutpa) recently awarded the prize of the National Luis Rentería Contest, which was won by experienced journalist Gabriel Castillo.
With a 40-year career in the sports area, mainly football, Castillo won the national contest with the essay "The Flight of the Hawk", which narrates the life passages and football career of the legend of Panamanian football, Gabriel 'Hawk' Gómez.
The book, written under the pseudonym El Comandante, not only serves as a living tribute to the magnificent career of 'Hawk' Gómez, but also as a lesson for young people to know his story.
"Afutpa thanks the Ministry of Culture for being a pillar of this important project, which brings valuable returns to Panamanian society, and the Panamanian Association of Lupus (Apalupus) for allowing the National Luis Rentería Contest to serve as a bridge for their noble purposes," highlights Afutpa in a press release.
Gabriel 'Hawk' Gómez was a distinguished Panamanian footballer who was part of the Senior National Team for many years, including the one that qualified and participated in the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
At the club level, Gómez, who started at Sporting 89, built his international career in Colombia, but also had his steps in Portugal and the United States (MLS).
