Olympic wrestler Ángel Cortés of Panama, the gold medalist at the Ayacucho/Lima 2025 Bolivarian Games, is preparing for another challenge in his sports career. Cortés is now gearing up for his participation in the Pan American Olympic Wrestling Championship, to be held in Coralville, Johnson County, Iowa, United States, from May 7 to 10 of this year. The significance of this continental tournament is that it will be a qualifier for the 2027 Pan American Games in Lima, so he needs to be fully prepared for it. To achieve this goal, Cortés, in the 86-kilogram category (freestyle), was sent by the Panamanian federation for this sport to a high-performance center in Madrid, Spain, where he will stay for approximately three months. Guillermo Mojica, a member of the board of directors of the Panamanian Federation of Olympic Wrestling, which is chaired by Roberto Monterrey, informed that Cortés traveled on Monday accompanied by Argentine coach Catriel Murriel. In Spain, he will have the opportunity, in addition to training, to compete in local cups, where he will face off against local and international athletes. To date, Cortés has been training at the Gimnasio Emiliano Bethancourt alongside his sport's team from the National Police, the security body to which he belongs. Mojica added that in addition to Cortés, athletes Wilfredo Steven López (65 kg freestyle) and Yusneiry Agrazal (53 kg freestyle) will also see action at the Pan American Olympic Wrestling Championship.
