De León began her campaign against the Argentine Brisa Mercado, to whom she lost by Waza-Ari. She then defeated the Argentine Álvaro Miranda 6-2 and the Venezuelan Leonardo Rodríguez.

In the semi-finals, the Panamanian athlete lost 8-0 to the Ecuadorian César Arteaga, so he had to compete for the bronze medal, once again defeating the Venezuelan Rodríguez.
