Second phase of Chilibre water plant modernization begins

Idaan has received the necessary equipment for the second phase of the Federico Guardia Conte plant modernization. The project aims to improve the reliability of water and electricity supply in Panama.

The second phase of the modernization of the Federico Guardia Conte water treatment plant in Chilibre will begin soon after the National Aqueducts and Sewers Institute (Idaan) acquired the two 115 kV power switches required for this purpose. Idaan detailed that this second phase will incorporate power transformers, motorized switches, and disconnectors of 115 kV, as part of the comprehensive modernization program for this key infrastructure. The first phase of modernization included the replacement of gates, screens, and valves installed since 1975, which has improved the safety and efficiency of the water production system. These new devices will replace the current electrical substation, which has been in operation for 35 years without maintenance. 'The objective is to guarantee the continuity of the drinking water service and the electrical stability in our plants, which are essential for the national supply,' stated Idaan's director, Rutilio Villarreal, before the deputies on November 13. Idaan indicated that before the end of the year, it expects the arrival of new pumps that will allow for an increase in production capacity and reinforce the operational stability of the plant. The funds for this important modernization were secured after the Budget Commission of the National Assembly approved the transfers that have allowed for the purchase of these transformers for $3,175,000 and $2,900,000. According to Idaan, this equipment is part of the coordinated work with the Electric Transmission Company S.A. (ETESA). It should be remembered that this Chilibre water treatment plant has been supplying drinking water to the capital city and the district of San Miguelito for 50 years.
