Panama's President José Raúl Mulino inaugurated a major irrigation and post-harvest project in Chiriquí province. The investment of over 6.5 million balboas will expand arable land and directly support 450 farmers, strengthening the nation's food security and agro-exports.


Panama's President Inaugurates New Irrigation System for Agricultural Development

President José Raúl Mulino inaugurated the Remigio Rojas Irrigation and Post-Harvest System, a project the agricultural sector had awaited for decades and which now seeks to give a real boost to Chiriquí's countryside. The investment was B/. 6,568,840.10, aimed at strengthening agricultural production and food security in the province of Chiriquí. Accompanied by Ministers José Luis Andrade (MOP) and Roberto Linares (MIDA), the head of state explained that the system allows expanding the agricultural frontier from 600 to 3,500 hectares, directly benefiting 450 producers and indirectly around 1,200 families in the district of Alanje, who live from agriculture and livestock. The project included the recovery of the intake on the Chico River, the rehabilitation of the dam, and improvements in the intake infrastructure. During the event, authorities highlighted that the system benefits rice, watermelon, and banana producers, and strengthens the agro-export capacity of the region. The company Inversiones y Transportes Castrejón, S.A. executed the work under the supervision of MOP and MIDA. Topographic studies, deep cleaning, and dredging of the reservoir were carried out, where 145,000 cubic meters of material were removed to guarantee its storage capacity. Maintenance was also performed on 59 kilometers of internal channels and 7 kilometers of roads were rehabilitated, improving water distribution and access within the system. Representatives of the district presented a plaque of recognition to the president for the completion of the project. With this delivery, Alanje strengthens its productive capacity and consolidates Chiriquí as one of the most important agro-exporting provinces in the country. In addition, 3,000 cubic meters of concrete were placed to reinforce the stability of the dike. The post-harvest plant was comprehensively rehabilitated to optimize the handling and processing of agricultural products.
