Protests Over Transfer of Disabled Individuals to Girls' Home in Panama

The transfer of 10 people with disabilities and psychiatric diagnoses from a shelter in Tocumen to the Hogar de Niñas María Auxiliadora in Chitré during last Carnival has sparked concern and demonstrations from the community, demanding a definitive solution. The measure, carried out in compliance with an official order, caused unease among residents, civic clubs, representatives of the Catholic Church, and civil society members, who argue that the María Auxiliadora Home is not suitable for this population, as its purpose has historically been to serve as a training and residence center for low-income young students. During a meeting with authorities, the parish priest of the San Juan Bautista de Chitré Cathedral, José Héctor González, stated that the community does not reject the transferred individuals but wants to be part of the solution. 'They are human beings and deserve the best care. We are not insensitive,' he expressed. The priest emphasized that there is a willingness to dialogue and collaborate, but reiterated that 'a boarding school is not the same as a home,' making it clear that the center was not designed to handle specialized psychiatric cases. Meanwhile, authorities reported that they are managing relocation options, including a space in Río Hato. The Minister of Social Development, Beatriz Carles, indicated that they are seeking the 'most suitable option for the youth, but also the fastest,' with the goal of transferring the people in the shortest time possible. However, while alternatives are being evaluated, the Hogar de Niñas María Auxiliadora remains occupied, preventing low-income youth from continuing to use the space as a student residence, a situation that has been one of the main demands from the community. A peaceful rally was held outside the facility, where protesters chanted slogans demanding that 'the girls return to the home.'
