A large amount of waste was extracted from the stormwater system located on 16th Street, at the entrance to the city of Colón, causing concern among authorities. During the cleanup, more than 15 tons of garbage were collected, finding all kinds of waste that obstruct water flow. Officials from the Ministry of Public Works have repeatedly warned that throwing trash in the streets, which ends up in the sewers, puts at risk the operation of drainage pumps, vital for preventing floods during heavy rains. In this situation, the authorities have called on the public not to throw waste into the streets and canals, as this practice increases the vulnerability of the stormwater system and the risk of emergencies. For Ricardo Becker, 46, the community must contribute by avoiding uncontrolled waste disposal, otherwise the floods will continue. In turn, Nancy López, 33, requested that fines be imposed on those who insist on throwing trash disorderly to protect the city and its people.
