A tumult broke out at noon on Tuesday in one of the courtrooms of the Accusatory Penal System (SPA) in the city of Colón, involving detainees who had come for a hearing and began to exchange blows. This prompted the intervention of agents from the National Police (PN). According to case information, there were detainees from rival gangs in the courtroom, and to handle the case, handcuffs were removed from them. It was then that they began to fight with their bare hands inside the courtroom where the hearing for various cases was to take place. The brawl was protagonized by detainees from the Nueva Esperanza Rehabilitation Center and others from penitentiary centers in the city of Panamá. Twenty-four detainees came from the Colón prison and about 15 from penitentiary centers in the capital. The incident forced judges and SPA judicial staff to leave the courtroom where the fight occurred and adjacent ones, fearing the violence would spread. Police agents arrived at the scene to control the situation, and the entire perimeter was secured.
