IDAAN to Suspend Water Supply in Capital Again

The National Water Institute (IDAAN) announced an 18-hour scheduled water outage in Panama City and San Miguelito due to technical work. This is not the first time the capital's residents face water supply interruptions, pointing to a systemic problem.

IDAAN to Suspend Water Supply in Capital Again

The National Institute of Aqueducts and Sewers (IDAAN) will once again suspend the drinking water supply in the capital city this Saturday. This is due to technical work that will force the shutdown of the Federico Guardia Conte water treatment plant in Chilibre. According to the entity, the measure is in response to maintenance and interconnection work on the so-called Eastern Hydraulic Ring, which implies stopping operations for about 18 hours, with a direct impact on most of the metropolitan area. IDAAN informed that the service will begin to be progressively restored once the work is completed, although it warned that the total normalization may take time depending on the altitude and location of the affected sectors. As is customary, the institution recommended that residents store water in advance, especially in homes, businesses, hospitals, and educational centers that depend on the continuous supply of the vital liquid. However, for many citizens, these warnings already sound like a broken record. Each new shutdown again highlights the fragility of the drinking water distribution system in the capital, where thousands of families are left at the mercy of tanks, cisterns, and improvised purchases. A problem that is not new. The Saturday shutdown is not an isolated incident. History repeats itself.
