Update on Special Fare Cards for Retirees and People with Disabilities in Panama Metro

Panama Metro has launched the automatic renewal process for special fare cards for retirees, the elderly, and people with disabilities for 2026. Learn how to activate your card, required documents, and applicable fares.

Retirees, Third Age, and Pensioners: The application must be made at one of the Specialized Attention Centers of Line 1 or 2 of the Panama Metro. When using the special cards, users must take the following considerations into account: Special cards are for the exclusive use of the cardholder: The improper use of these cards, which grant a 30% discount on the regular fare in the Metro, will be sanctioned in accordance with the Metro Panama user regulation. The benefit can only be requested and validated by the cardholder and not by a third party. According to Sonda, this benefit will be applicable to all users who have the special card and have made a minimum of one (1) trip in the last six (6) months of the year 2025, and will be renewed automatically. If the card is damaged and does not work correctly, the cardholder must go to any of the Specialized Attention Centers located in the Metro stations, for its proper review and replacement if necessary. With the special cards benefit, the fare for retirees, pensioners, third age, and people with disabilities would be as follows: Line 1 = 0.24 cents and Line 2 = 0.35 cents. Cover the cost of the special card (in case a new one is required). The activation process for special cards for retirees, pensioners, third age, and people with disabilities for the 2026 period is underway as of January 26. “This renewal process seeks to facilitate access to the benefit, ensuring that users who already have a special card can maintain their preferential fare automatically and without additional procedures, as long as they meet the established criteria,” noted Christopher Machazek, Mobility Manager of Smart Cities of SONDA Panama. To make this update effective, the user must approach their special card at any of the ‘Contactless Travel’ balance activators, as well as the card vending and reloading machines installed in all Line 1 and 2 Metro stations. People with disabilities: The application must be made at one of the Specialized Attention Centers (CAE) of Line 1 or 2 of the Panama Metro. Personal identity card, certification issued by SENADIS.
