Four Panamanian public entities signed a Memorandum of Understanding to install free Wi-Fi on the summit of Volcán Barú, benefiting tourists and strengthening emergency communications.
The State Radio and Television System (SERTV), together with the Ministry of Environment (MiAmbiente), the Panama Tourism Authority (ATP), and the National System for Civil Protection (SINAPROC), formalized a strategic alliance to install connectivity on Volcán Barú, promoting innovation, sustainable development, and inter-institutional coordination in Panama.
The initiative was sealed through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the entities. The event was also attended by key figures such as Juan Carlos Navarro, Minister of Environment; Dustin Guerra, General Director of SERTV; Jorge Correa, Deputy Administrator General of the ATP; and Omar Smith Gallardo, General Director of SINAPROC.
Promoting Tourism and Security
The central purpose of the agreement is to establish the necessary infrastructure to provide connectivity on Volcán Barú, which will allow national and foreign tourists to communicate and share their experience from the summit, enhancing the tourist appeal of the Chiriquí region.
Additionally, this connectivity is fundamental for security, as it will favor timely and efficient communication with public institutions in the event of emergencies in the protected area.
Access Mechanisms and Dissemination
As part of the commitments made, the installation of two billboards on the volcano's summit is contemplated. These billboards, one in English and one in Spanish, will integrate a QR code that will provide direct access to the free Wi-Fi service.
The four signatory institutions will be responsible for disseminating, through their social networks and official platforms, detailed instructions on how visitors can access and use the internet service available on the summit of Volcán Barú. SERTV, as one of the main drivers of the initiative, reaffirms its commitment to the country, by putting technology and communication at the service of citizenship, strengthening security, promoting tourism, and bringing information closer to all Panamanians.
