World Wetlands Day in Panama

Panama will celebrate World Wetlands Day with a free event aimed at promoting the value of these strategic ecosystems. The event will take place on Monday, February 2nd, at 4:00 p.m. at The Atheneum of Ciudad del Saber, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the Panama Wetlands Committee. Juan Carlos Navarro, Minister of the Environment, stated that these ecosystems are an irreplaceable part of Panama's natural heritage. Among them are the Gulf of Montijo, San San–Pond Sak, Panama Bay, and the Matusagaratí Wetlands Complex in Darién, the latter officially declared in 2025. Sandy Mosquera, on behalf of the National Wetlands Committee, recalled that since 2006, the organization has been key in monitoring and generating public policies for the sustainable use of these resources. Despite their importance for climate change mitigation and water security, wetlands face threats such as unregulated tourism, pollution, and uncontrolled urban growth. As part of World Wetlands Day, the documentary 'Caribbean Treasure' will be screened for free at The Atheneum of Ciudad del Saber. Following the screening, a panel discussion with specialists will be held to analyze the governance and protection of these environments. Panama boasts a vast diversity of wetlands internationally recognized as Ramsar sites. This 52-minute audiovisual production addresses the richness of the reefs and the challenges faced by the ecosystems linked to coastal wetlands.
