Panama Deploys Security Forces for Carnival

Panama has deployed approximately 30,000 security units to maintain order during Carnival festivities. The National Police, Border Service, and Migration Service are reinforcing controls on roads, in tourist centers, and at borders. The Minister of Security called on citizens to abide by the law and act responsibly regarding safety.


For this operation, 850 units have been dedicated exclusively to this task, with speed controls, breathalyzer tests, permanent preventive presence, and special measures such as lane reversals to facilitate travel to the interior of the country and return to Panama City. For the Ministry of Security, one of the main axes of the operation is traffic and road safety. Therefore, it urged citizens to enjoy in order for the carnival to conclude satisfactorily. This operation will be led by the National Police with its 18,500 units, who will be responsible for citizen security, public order, and the protection of residential, commercial, and tourist areas. "We have deployed our Public Force throughout the country: on roads, beaches, rivers, tourist centers, and at every point of concentration of people, our specialized services will be present," it was stated. In turn, the National Border Service contributes 4,135 units deployed in rural areas, inland communities, and border zones to reinforce territorial control and peaceful coexistence. Some 30,000 units of the Public Force and other security institutions have been deployed across the country to ensure the safety of Panamanians during the Carnival festivities. Meanwhile, the National Migration Service reinforces its operations with 960 officials daily, responsible for control at airports, ports, border crossings, and strategic points in the country. However, the minister recalled that security does not depend solely on the authorities, but constitutes a shared commitment. "We will act with determination, within the framework of the law and with respect for human rights," promised the minister. And the SUME 9-1-1 will maintain 744 units, including paramedics, dispatchers, and specialized personnel, supported by ambulances, medical motorcycles, and strategic posts to ensure rapid attention in any emergency. Frank Alexis Ábrego, Minister of Public Security, affirmed that Carnival 2026 is a planned action with responsibility and firmness, with the purpose of ensuring that these festivities take place in an atmosphere of tranquility and respect. Meanwhile, the National Aeronaval Service participates with 3,910 units, who will be in charge of maritime, air, and river surveillance on beaches, rivers, ports, islands, and coastal areas, as well as emergency response at sea. Ábrego detailed that traffic controls and breathalyzer tests will be reinforced. "The message is simple: if you are going to drive, do not consume alcohol, because prevention saves lives."
