Hundreds participate in Sorrows Friday procession in Panama

Hundreds of people took part on Friday night in the Procession of the Sorrows Friday, one of the first events marking the start of Holy Week in the Casco Antiguo of Panama City. The event began at 6:00 p.m. with a Eucharist, and at 7:00 p.m. the procession started, consisting of three floats: the Descent, the Redeemer Christ, and that of the Sorrowful Virgin. The route departed from the Church of Our Lady of Mercy, took Central Avenue and culminated in the Metropolitan Basilica Cathedral Santa MarĂa la Antigua. Along the way, 178 people who are part of the Confraternity of the Redeemer Christ Virgin of Sorrows accompanied the floats, in a demonstration of faith that brought together both parishioners and visitors. Previously, in the Church of Saint Francis of Assisi, the image of the Sorrowful Virgin was prepared and dressed before being moved to the starting point at the Church of Mercy. The procession represents the seven sorrows of the Virgin Mary and constitutes a moment of reflection for believers at the beginning of the Holy Week celebrations. Hundreds of faithful accompanied the Procession of the Sorrows Friday in the Casco Antiguo that went from the Church of Mercy to the Metropolitan Cathedral, in an atmosphere of solemnity and devotion. This activity is part of the religious calendar that each year brings together thousands of people in the Casco Antiguo, consolidating itself as one of the most representative expressions of faith in the country.
