Digital Home Security: 99% of Latin American Families Now Communicate Online

Family life in Latin America has almost entirely migrated to the virtual environment, creating an urgent need to strengthen digital security at home. According to a recent Kaspersky study, 99% of people in the region use digital means to stay in touch with relatives, while only 1% claim not to use technology for this purpose. The report details that instant messaging leads the preferences with a 93% adoption rate in apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, or Signal. Likewise, 69% of families share leisure time through streaming platforms, and 49% use video calls regularly, consolidating a hyper-connectivity that, while strengthening bonds, also increases cybersecurity risks. Risks from Digital Trust. This digital transition has expanded the attack surface for cybercriminals. Channels operating in a trusted environment, such as family groups, are now being used for social engineering and emotional phishing attacks. Fabiano Tricarico, Consumer Products Director for the Americas at Kaspersky, points out that the lack of verification in these environments makes it easy for urgent messages or unexpected links to compromise accounts and devices. The risk becomes critical when sharing digital credentials among household members. The study warns that reusing passwords creates a domino effect: the vulnerability of a single device can allow attackers to escalate to the email and financial services of the entire family unit. Recommendations for Family Protection. To mitigate these threats and ensure effective digital security at home, Kaspersky specialists suggest implementing the following measures: Two-Factor Authentication: Activate this additional layer of security on critical accounts to prevent unauthorized access even if the password is leaked. Password Management: Avoid reusing passwords across different platforms and use password managers to maintain strong credentials. Alert Criteria: Be wary of unusual requests or suspicious links, and always verify the authenticity of the message through other communication channels. Integrated Solutions: Install security tools that can block scam attempts and detect malicious links on all home devices. The study supporting these findings was conducted by the Kaspersky market research center in November 2025, involving 3,000 participants from various regions.
