Gustavo Sánchez Sentenced to 30 Years for Murder of Yohany Rivera

Gustavo Enrique Sánchez (34) was sentenced to 30 years in prison as the author of the murder of Yohany Génesis Rivera (21), committed on the morning of January 16, 2021, in the Los Cántaros No. 2 sector, located in Nuevo Tocumen. The sentencing was established by a Trial Court of the First Judicial Circuit of Panama, after representatives of the Specialized Section in Homicide and Femicide presented during the trial irrefutable evidence that linked Sánchez to Rivera's murder. Sánchez will remain in the penitentiary where he has been since 2021 to serve the 26 years left of his sentence, as he was apprehended hours after the homicide and, according to Panamanian law, the time of deprivation of liberty he has already served must be deducted. In the early morning of Saturday, January 16, 2021, Yohany was in a house in the neighborhood during a family celebration, when several subjects fired shots from a moving vehicle and fatally shot her. The investigation revealed that the target of the attack was the young woman's boyfriend, who was unharmed despite being by her side when she was hit by the bullets. After the attack, the young woman was urgently taken to the Irma De Lourdes Tzanetatos Hospital, located in Tocumen, but she died anyway.
