'Bebecita' Acquitted of Homicide and Kidnapping

A Panamanian court has acquitted a young woman, Aleyssa Ivette Douglas Reina, in the murder case of transporter Próspero Espino. She was only found guilty of aggravated robbery. The woman's mother stated that her daughter is innocent and was unfairly accused for many years.

After 17 days of hearings with 19 people in the dock, the Trial Court that heard the so-called 'Acarreo 1' case declared Aleyssa Ivette Douglas Reina not guilty of homicide, kidnapping, and criminal association. The court determined that her criminal responsibility for these offenses was not proven, but it did find her guilty of aggravated robbery. Sentencing for that crime will be read next week. The trial allowed the court to assign individual responsibility to each defendant after analyzing the prosecution's evidence for over two weeks. During the proceedings, the Public Ministry's investigation established who committed the homicide, who participated in the kidnapping, and who formed a criminal conspiracy, assigning each of the 19 accused the corresponding crime based on their involvement. After evaluating the evidence, the judges determined that Douglas Reina had no criminal responsibility for the most serious crimes, though they did find evidence linking her to aggravated robbery, for which she was convicted. However, her mother states there is no evidence against her daughter. 'They Labeled Her a Murderer.' Upon learning the verdict, Yaira Reina, the young woman's mother, stated that her daughter was harshly labeled for years for a crime that could not ultimately be proven against her. 'My daughter was innocent, and it has now been demonstrated that there was no homicide or criminal association. Throughout this time, they pointed at her as if she were a murderer,' she expressed. The mother recounted that the process has been especially painful for her daughter, who has been separated from her children while facing the judicial process. 'It has been very hard years for her. She has not been able to be with her daughters, and many things that were not true were said,' she affirmed. Three Weeks of Trial Without Media Coverage. Reina also questioned that during the nearly three-week trial, there was no media coverage of the proceedings, even though in earlier stages of the case, versions were published that implicated her daughter. 'During the trial, nobody wrote anything. Before, many things were said, but now that it is demonstrated that there was no homicide, nobody says anything,' she maintained. The Case. The case known as 'Acarreo 1' originated after the homicide of transporter Próspero Espino, which occurred in December 2021 after he was contacted to perform a supposed cargo transport service. According to the investigations, the victim was deceived through a freight request, deprived of liberty, and subsequently stripped of her belongings. With the verdict issued by the Trial Court, the main phase of the process for Douglas Reina concludes, with only the reading of the sentence for aggravated robbery remaining, which will be known in a hearing scheduled for next week.
