The Ministry of Public Works (MOP) of Panama, through its Director of Special Projects, Edgar Peregrina, announced that the formal notification process for the Vía España expansion project has begun. The ministry emphasized that this initiative is part of a comprehensive strategy to modernize mass transit, reduce travel times, and optimize traffic flow on this important corridor. With an estimated execution period of 900 days, the socialization process is being carried out through door-to-door visits. During the meetings, local business owners expressed their willingness to support the modernization of Vía España, requesting that authorities consider them during the various stages of execution. Among the contemplated improvements is the construction of sidewalks up to three meters wide on both sides of the road, designed to enhance pedestrian safety. During the announcement, it was clarified that the eviction measure planned for March 30, 2026, against owners of fondas in the Vereda Afroantillana area has been canceled; instead, the space will be subject to a joint reorganization with the Municipality of Panama for the benefit of the residents of Río Abajo. The notification process focused on businesses located within the Vía España right-of-way area, where work will be carried out, including the implementation of exclusive lanes for the MiBus transportation system. The MOP assured that the process of releasing the road servitude will be carried out in strict compliance with current regulations, once the corresponding contract is finalized. Authorities reiterated that the project aims to positively impact thousands of daily users, guaranteeing at all times respect for the rights of residents and business owners operating in the project's area of influence.
