One night on Sunday, April 12, a National Police officer died after being injured during an armed clash in the El Chorrillo area of Panama City. The victim was identified as Elvis Espinosa, who was shot in the chest. Despite being transported for specialized medical attention, his death was subsequently confirmed due to the severity of the injury. In the same incident, another police officer, a woman, was also injured, according to preliminary reports. Following the attack, the National Police announced the deployment of operations in the area to apprehend those responsible and bring them before judicial authorities. In recent weeks, violence has taken over the streets and neighborhoods in several areas of Panama City, leaving a death toll and injuries. In the first two months of 2026, 77 homicides have been reported, according to data from the Ministry of Public Security, while 2025 closed with 593 cases. Nine gangs operate only in El Chorrillo, according to 2025 reports.
