Warning of Social Unrest Over Retirement Age Proposal

Economist Felipe Argote warns that raising retirement age could lead to a social explosion in Panama, urging inclusive dialogue and highlighting the urgent need for transparency in pension fund management.

Warning of Social Unrest Over Retirement Age Proposal

Economist Felipe Argote has raised a warning about the possible consequences of a project related to the Social Security Fund (CSS) that is under discussion in Panama. Argote emphasizes that if this project is implemented, it could trigger a social, economic, and institutional collapse in the country.

Argote asserts that raising the retirement age could lead to a scenario of social crisis that would have devastating consequences for Panama. Furthermore, he warns that this measure could increase the perception of inequality and exacerbate existing social tensions in Panamanian society.

The economist calls for an inclusive national dialogue, emphasizing the importance of considering the needs of workers, retirees, and future contributors to ensure a stable and prosperous future for the country. Argote highlights the need to maintain transparency in the administration of CSS funds and to implement measures that ensure the long-term sustainability of the system.

Regarding the proposal to transfer CSS funds to private banks, Argote qualifies it as an attack on the trust of the insured and as a measure that could destabilize the pension system. He warned that this action could be the perfect excuse for former U.S. President Donald Trump to seek intervention in the Panama Canal, given the tensions that could arise.

On the other hand, the economist criticizes the idea of raising the retirement age, arguing that it could increase inequality in the country and undermine the stability of those who depend on Social Security for their future well-being. Instead of focusing on this aspect, Argote suggests exploring alternatives such as improving the administrative efficiency of the CSS and combating the evasion of worker-employer contributions to ensure the sustainability of the system.
