Tipping is voluntary in Panama

Acodeco reaffirmed that the tipping percentage is optional and depends on the consumer's judgment about what they consider fair.

Tipping is voluntary in Panama

The Consumer Protection and Defense Authority (Acodeco) reiterated that tipping in service establishments in Panama is not mandatory. According to Acodeco, the percentage of tip is completely voluntary and it is up to the consumer to decide how much they consider fair to leave as a tip.

The institution emphasized that consumers are not obligated to pay any specific amount as a tip, as this is a gesture of gratitude for the service received. It is important for consumers to be aware that they have the freedom to decide whether or not to leave a tip, and in what amount.

In Acodeco's words: "Tipping is a way to show appreciation for a service, but it is not an obligation. Each person is free to leave a tip if they wish and in the amount they deem appropriate".

It is essential that both consumers and service establishments are aware that tipping is a voluntary gesture and that no one can be pressured or coerced into leaving a tip against their will. This measure aims to protect the rights of consumers and promote a culture of gratitude in the service sector in Panama.
