Fishermen in Boca de Parita demand increased maritime patrols amid wave of thefts
Fishermen in Boca de Parita have expressed deep concern over a wave of thefts, which they say is a severe blow to the local economy and their family's livelihood. "We are tired of losing what we worked so hard to buy," stated one fisherman, who requested to remain anonymous.
The workers of the sea indicate that these thefts represent a hard blow to the local economy, as each stolen vessel and equipment means being unable to bring food to their homes. In recent hours, a complete boat with all its equipment was stolen, an investment valued at approximately 12 thousand balboas.
However, they point out that this is not an isolated incident, as constant thefts have been reported at the pier for weeks.
"They are taking trawl nets, fishing gear, outboard motors, and no one is held accountable. There are cameras here, but it seems they don't work, because nothing is ever seen," they added.
In response to this problem, they have requested the Maritime Authority of Panama and the National Aeronaval Service to reinforce patrols and improve operational effectiveness in the area, fearing that the thefts will continue if swift action is not taken. The fishermen also requested an urgent meeting between local authorities, security entities, and representatives of fishing organizations to establish concrete actions that allow for the guarantee of surveillance in the port.
