Moody's reaffirms Banco Nacional de Panamá's rating

International rating agency Moody's Investors Service has reaffirmed Banco Nacional de Panamá's (Banconal) rating at Baa3 (investment grade). This decision confirms that the bank remains a solid and reliable institution within the Panamanian financial system. The re-evaluation is due to the bank's sound management of interests, commissions, and expense control. Moody's also recognized that Banco Nacional is not just a bank, but a key piece of the country, as it manages government funds, supports productive programs, and facilitates the flow of money between banks. General Manager Javier Carrizo Esquivel stated that this reaffirmation by Moody's 'reflects the market's confidence in the stability and strength of Banco Nacional, as well as its role in the country's economic and social development.' This provides the bank with backing and stability, even when economic conditions become tough. Regarding earnings, Moody's highlighted that Banconal closed the first half of 2025 with strong figures, generating a net profit of 1.8% on its assets. The report also noted that the bank maintains a stable deposit base, largely thanks to the support of the public sector and its own employees.
