Panama is preparing for the disappearance of the cent and the implementation of price rounding, following the United States' decision to suspend its minting. The manager of the National Bank of Panama, Javier Carrizo, announced that he will send a proposal to the Ministry of Economy and Finance to sponsor a law that will allow businesses to round prices. This law is estimated to be ready between June or July 2026. Carrizo explained that if the fraction ending in 1 and 2 cents is rounded to 0, those from 3 to 7 cents are rounded to 5. Those that end in 8 and 9 are rounded up to 1. This measure seeks to facilitate daily activities once the cents cease to circulate. "We hope that once the approval of the National Assembly is passed, a necessary time can be given to businesses to reprogram their cash registers," Carrizo told the media.
