Panama's Assembly approves $71.8M for infrastructure

The National Assembly approved $71.8 million for the Ministry of Public Works (MOP) to move forward with infrastructure projects and address emergency situations. The approval was given with 11 votes in favor and one abstention during the Budget Committee session, where 27 transfers of items were approved. MOP Minister José Luis Andrade presented the technical and financial justification for the transfers, highlighting that these investments are key to improving national mobility, strengthening territorial integration, and boosting economic development in strategic areas of the country. Of the $71.8 million approved, approximately $7.4 million will be allocated to pay contractors who worked during the 2024 National Emergency at critical points such as Alto Bambito (construction of a wall and road restoration), Cerro Pelado, Llano Nopo, Cerro Algodón, and Llano Tugri, in the Ngäbe-Buglé Comarca. Andrade thanked the deputies for their support and announced that he will return to the Assembly next week to request the approval of more transfers, thus ensuring the continuity of the works already underway.
