France Supports Family Agriculture in Guna Yala Region

The development of agriculture in small spaces is the strategy being taught to families in the Guna Yala region, in an initiative jointly promoted by the France-Panama Fund and the Ministry of Agricultural Development (MIDA). These plots have been organized in the Isberyala area, located in the Cartí sector, district number 1, in the Guna Yala region. This action seeks to strengthen food security and encourage producers to take advantage of reduced spaces for food production for self-consumption. The gardens were installed in the backyards of each producer's home, occupying an area of 28 square meters per unit, representing a total of 140 square meters dedicated to the horticultural project. During the event, various varieties of vegetables and plants were sown, including: tomato, cucumber, bell pepper, lettuce, carrot, anise, marigold, chive, blackberry, and rosemary. In addition to producing food for self-consumption, this initiative also aims to promote learning, care, and proper management of family gardens. In collaboration with the France-Panama Fund and the MIDA regional office in Colón, the project aims to improve the quality of life for the beneficiary families and expand its reach to more members of the community.
